Public Panel and Reception: Poetry Collections/Archives and the Role of the Community, Educators, Research and Recovery Efforts

An opening panel of selected curators and black poetry centers will discuss the challenges of poetry collections and archives and the role of the community, educators and researchers in recovery efforts. The event will also include the opening of "Voicing America," an exhibit curated specifically for the Institute. The panel and opening will be followed by a reception. Participants include Kathleen Bethel (Northwestern University), Melissa Watterworth Batt (University of Connecticut), Clarence Hunter (Tougaloo College Civil Rights Collection), Beth Whittaker (KU Spencer Research Library) and resident faculty Joanne Gabbin (James Madison University).

Poetry and Its Publics

This panel will look at contemporary black poetries within the context of broader national and international developments. The panel includes Joseph Harrington, KU, author of Poetry and the Public: The Social Form of Modern US Poetics; Jill Kuhnheim, KU, author of Spanish American Poetry at the End of the 20th Century: Textual Disruptions; institute resident faculty Tony Bolden, KU, author of Afro-Blue, Improvisations in African American Poetry; and Nicole Hodges Persley, KU, author of Sampling and Remixing Blackness in Hip Hop Theater and Performance.
